Brother DCP-120C Manual (User Guide & Setup Guide)

Using a printer, scanner, and photocopier does not have to take up a lot of space. After all, there are various multi-function, or all-in-one, gadgets on the market that combine the three functions of printing, scanning, and copying into a single unit. The Brother DCP-120C model has recently joined this joyful club of devices. This silver and black MFD (Multi-Function Device) makes use of four ink cartridges: black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. It connects to the computer using a USB cable that is not included. Brother has placed both the paper input and output functionalities on the front of the machine to save on necessary desk space. The input paper tray can accommodate up to 100 A4 sheets while also serving as a support for any printer output. A flat-bed scanner with an optical resolution of 600 x 2400dpi or 19,200dpi interpolated is mounted on top of the unit. Using the built-in ADF (Automatic Document Feed) on the top of the unit, the scanner can handle single sheets or multiple pages. It should be noted that each ADF-fed page is considered as a separate file rather than as individual pages on a single document. Slots for common memory card formats are located on the front of the devices. SmartMedia, Compact Flash, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Secure Digital, xD Picture Card, and MultiMedia Card are all supported by these slots. A control panel is located on the right side of the machine. This consists of a small LCD display that provides status feedback as well as buttons for altering settings and initiating various functions. It is also possible to activate these capabilities on the Brother DCP-120C from inside the numerous software packages that Brother has included with the machine. In most cases, the software is available in both Windows and Mac versions, with Windows users receiving a free copy of Systran Translation software. The machine is quite simple to set up, though there are a few of extended pauses that may lead you to believe the operation has stalled. If an issue occurs, Brother has offered the option to reinstall the included MFL-Pro Suite software. This occurred in my instance, however any fault was most likely attributable to the protection software running on the test machine, which objected to several of the modifications to system settings that the Brother installation attempted to perform. Brother includes their Control Centre software as well as PaperPort SE in addition to the conventional print and scan drivers. While the latter provides document management and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) capabilities, the Control Centre offers a variety of scan and copy options. There are options for scanning photos and OCR text, with the results delivered to user-defined apps. In addition, you can configure four separate custom settings for copying actions. The print resolution can reach 1200 x 600 dpi. For this device, Brother claims printing speeds of up to 20ppm monochrome and 15ppm color. When utilizing quick print mode, the best I could manage was 16ppm monochrome and 13ppm color. In regular mode, a 4×6 inch photo took 18 seconds and one minute in fine mode. The print quality was at a standard that should suffice in the majority of cases. While I was pleased with the print rates attained by this device, I found the scanning and copying operations to be a little slow. This was most visible when uploading a scanned image to a graphics application on the DCP-120C. Having said that, the scanner program was sophisticated enough to select the item for scanning without any more input from the user, with satisfactory results.
