The control panel, which stands on a ledge above the recessed output slot, has a five-line, 22-character backlit LCD flanked by clusters of copying and scanning buttons. The equipment is completed with a mushroom-cap-shaped scanner bed and an automatic document feeder. The DCP-‘ can be connected to a Mac or PC through a parallel connection or the latest USB 2.0 (cables not provided). Ethernet is also available from Brother. The Brother DCP-8040 includes the majority of the functions you’d expect in a laser multifunction device, such as a 50-page automated document feeder and a large, legal-size flatbed 600-by-2,400dpi color scanner. Its monochrome laser printer engine produces good print quality at 21 pages per minute. Surprisingly, it does not feature a fax machine. This machine is simpler than other multifunctions without a fax, however it is inadequate for many tiny or home offices. Most nonfaxing multifunctions are based on color inkjet printers and other features that appeal to creatives rather than business managers, but this laser-based device closely matches the fax-capable Brother MFC-8440, which the DCP-8040 paces or exceeds on most image-quality and speed tests. This device appears cleaner than other multifunctions due to the absence of fax functionalities on the control panel. It is 20 inches across the top by 17 inches deep and stands 18 inches tall, with a 250-sheet paper tray snuggled in the thinner, 14-inch-wide base. A hand-feed slot above the paper tray accepts single sheets or envelopes. The same slot opens to reveal the toner cartridge and image disc, which snap together and simply fit into the printer on smooth grooves. That works out to a stunning 3 cents per page with the small cartridge and 2.3 cents with the large one. The DCP-8040 is praised for its design, which has robust, deep handgrips at the base and under the scanner bed, making the 35-pound machine easy to maneuver. The device’s thin base frees up space on your desk. We particularly appreciate the control panel’s easy-to-read backlit LCD and the time-saving buttons for frequently used functionality. The scanner lid slides up about an inch on its hinges, but the lid won’t come off to let you scan chunky objects or books.
