Brother has long been known for its color fax and multi-function machines, but it has recently expanded its color laser printer and multi-function product line. Because the DCP-9040CN is a Digital Copier Printer, it is primarily used as a color photocopier. However, because it is designed for both local and network printing, it might also serve as the foundation for small office or workgroup printing. As multi-function machines evolve, they no longer resemble printers with scanners slapped on top. The industrial design of Brother makes an effort to merge the lines of the two components, and pages that eject from the top of the printer portion are easily retrievable from the gap under the scanner. The scanner itself has a 50-sheet ADF on top, however the flatbed glass can also handle documents up to A4. The control panel, which has a traditional design, is located in the front. There’s a two-line by 16-character backlit LCD display, a four-way menu control button with extra buttons and indicators surrounding it, a keypad, and three function keys for color and mono copying and stopping a running task. There are buttons on the far left for enlarging and shrinking copies, selecting the input tray, and selecting quality. There’s also a Scan button and a Secure Print button here, which holds print jobs until a four-digit pass code is supplied. The DCP-9040CN is suitable for dealing with sensitive papers that require you to be present at the printer while they print. Above the main paper tray, which can hold up to 250 sheets, a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray pulls down from the front of the printer portion. As an alternative, a second 500-sheet paper tray can be installed underneath. At the back, there are conventional USB 2.0 and Ethernet connectors. The drum unit is pre-installed, but before you can start printing, you must insert each of the four toner cartridges into a rack that swings out from the front. A large number of tapes, spacers, and protective sheets must also be removed from various areas of the machine. We’ve never seen a device with so many, and there’s little information in the quick start instructions to show where they’re all situated. There’s nothing unusual about the software installation, as long as you remember to install it before attaching the device. PaperPort 11 Special Edition is offered in its entirety, and it is an excellent tool for managing most scan operations as well as routine document management duties. Brother offers emulated PCL and PostScript drivers that allow multiple pages per sheet, watermarks (but not overprints), and manual duplexing. Brother advertises a print speed of up to 20ppm in both black and color, however we only got around 12ppm in both. The DCP-9040CN remains affordable, especially when Brother quotes draft speeds — all of our testing are done in regular print settings. A single-page, color copy took only 17 seconds to complete from both the flatbed and the ADF; a significant improvement in speed. Finally, a 15 x 10cm shot took 23 seconds at the device’s maximum resolution of 2400 x 600dpi, but just 15 seconds at the device’s default resolution of 600dpi.
