The HL-4570CDW has the same black and cream livery and huge, monolithic appearance as its lower-spec relative. A fold-down, 50-sheet multi-purpose tray with a slide-out and flip-open paper support rests beneath the 250-sheet paper tray. It’s fine for one-time jobs, but it’s not something you’d want to leave open because the support is frail and could shatter if stepped into. A 500-sheet tray is offered as an option, however we believe a workgroup printer should be able to load more than 300 sheets as usual. The top panel lacks an output tray, thus pages end up sitting flat on its surface. To keep them tidy, there’s a flip-up paper stop at the end. The control panel is high-gloss black with seven buttons for menu navigation and starting and canceling print jobs. There’s also a Secure-print option, which allows you to hold a print job until you get to the printer. The backlight on the fold-up, 2-line by 16-character LCD display is yellowy-green. A USB port is located just over the front lip of the HL-4570CDW, allowing you to print graphics files directly from a USB drive. You can connect through USB, 10/100 Ethernet, or wireless. If you choose wifi, you can connect using a pin number, a passcode, or a single-button connect if your router has one. All three are simple, and the installation applet detects and connects to the HL-4570CDW. Drivers are given for Windows and OS X, as usual, and a Linux version may be downloaded from the Brother Solutions website. Emulation includes PCL6 and PostScript Level 3 functionality. The toner cartridges are pre-installed, but before you can start printing, you must fold down the front panel and slide out the rack housing them to remove some packing components. There is a separate drum, transfer belt, and waste toner box, however these do not require any extra setup.
