The key determining element in the pricing of a mono laser printer is its speed, therefore look for a machine with a speed of 34ppm, such as the Brother HL-5440D. This printer is an evolution of the company’s earlier desktop lasers, aimed at small enterprises that don’t require a wireless connection yet desire cheap operating expenses. The Brother HL-5440D printer is a squashed cube with rounded vertical corners that looks quite functional and businesslike. The straightforward control panel consists of a column of LEDs indicating toner, drum, paper, back cover, and general errors, as well as two lozenge-shaped buttons in green and pink for starting and stopping print jobs. The output tray is a recess in the top cover of the printer, and the feed tray, which holds 250 sheets, slides out from the bottom of the front panel. A pull-down cover above that produces a 50-sheet multipurpose tray. It offers a slide out and flip over support for special media up to A4 size. Up to two additional 250-sheet trays can be added for a total paper capacity of 800 sheets. There’s a common USB port and a classic parallel port on the back, but there’s no wireless connection, so there’s no convenient way to print from phones or tablets. The Brother HL-5440D makes use of a two-part drum and toner cartridge with varying replacement frequency. After you’ve pressed a button in front of the output tray and folded down the machine’s front third, the two clip together and slide down into the machine’s center. Toner cartridges include capacities of 3,000, 8,000, and 12,000 pages, while the drum has a capacity of 30,000 pages. These are high yields for a machine at this price, and when combined with the relatively big paper capacity, indicate cheap maintenance costs. Other than a simple driver, there is little nothing in the form of support software. The driver allows poster prints, multiple pages per sheet, and A5 booklet printing, as well as watermarking with predefined or custom text. On paper, 38ppm appears to be a high speed for a mid-range mono laser that is a little too good to be true, and it was. Despite its quick first page out time of less than nine seconds, which we confirmed in our tests, our five-page text document took 19 seconds, a speed of 15.8ppm. This was also true for the same print in toner-save mode. The pace increased to 27.3ppm on the longer, 20-page test, still falling short of the headline statistic. These kinds of discrepancies are frequently caused by manufacturers measuring speeds separately from any start-up time and only from page to page. We don’t think this form of assessment is fair, because in reality, you have to wait for the printer to process the pages before printing. It’s all done to get bigger numbers on the box.
