Brother HL-5470DW Manual (User Guide & Setup Guide)

What the Brother HL-5470DW monochrome laser printer lacks in speed, it makes up for in high-quality output and low-cost toner. In reality, when using the high-capacity cartridges, this is one of the cheapest-to-operate printers on the market, inkjet or laser, consumer or corporate. Installing this device is simple, but if you don’t have a WPS router, you’ll need to use USB or ethernet for the Wi-Fi setup (a small complaint). The software is great; Brother has even managed to automate the Add Printer function in OS X, something most printer vendors appear to be unaware of. The fact that Brother respects Apple is intriguing, given that this printer’s clumsy controls are on the opposite end of the design spectrum. While the single-line monochrome LCD and small number of buttons are adequate for error messages and the like, they do have limits. Entering a passcode for secure print jobs is time-consuming at best, so most users will likely stay with simple four-digit number sequences that don’t need much scrolling. It’s usable once you’re used to the UI, but a keypad might be necessary to make the secure print feature, well, more secure. The HL-5470DW duplexes automatically (prints on both sides of the page). There’s a 250-sheet bottom-mounted input tray as well as a 50-sheet multipurpose tray that folds down in the front (for envelopes, thick paper, and the like). If that isn’t enough, you can add a bottom-mounted, 500-sheet auxiliary tray from Brother’s online mall, though we found better rates elsewhere. It comes basic with 128MB of memory, which may be expanded to 384MB through a SODIMM slot beneath the unit’s pop-open side panel. While it is not a fast printer, it is acceptable for a small workgroup or office. Monochrome pages leave at 14 ppm on the PC and 16.7 ppm on the Mac, and 4-by-6-inch photographs printed on letter-size paper exit at around 2.0 mp. This model’s automatic duplexing, which usually slows down printing, is surprisingly fast. The output quality of the HL-5470DW is normally pretty good. Text was dark and sharp in our tests, but we detected some light striations in huge regions of black. Photos were displayed adequately, albeit they were a touch rough and grainy. The higher-quality HQ1200 and 1200DPI settings on the printer provided very minor increases.
