The Brother MFC-290C is a basic inkjet multifunction printer designed for home use but with certain business-friendly capabilities. Although its color reproduction may be improved when printing photos, it is adequate for printing documents and schoolwork. It contains a single-line mono LCD on the front that allows you to quickly select between basic copy, scan, and fax capabilities. This printer includes a PictBridge-capable USB connector as well as SD, xD, and MemoryStick memory card slots. The paper input tray is located in the front rather than the back of the multifunction, and it is fully retractable into the multifunction’s body, so it does not expand its footprint. There is also an automatic document feeder integrated. In our printing tests, the performed admirably for the price, however its speed would not blow you away. When we ran our mono and color draft quality tests, the first page came out in an average of 13.4 seconds. The first page of a normal quality paper was printed in 27.5 seconds. The draft quality mono documents were printed at 15.8 pages per minute, whereas the normal grade mono documents were printed at 3.2ppm. The multifunction also has a “rapid normal” setting that gives a balance of speed and quality; we reached speeds of 5.7ppm using this setting. The printing speeds for color and black and white were nearly the same. Draft printing achieved 15.5ppm on average, but standard printing achieved the same 3.2ppm on average as when printing mono pages. The fast normal mode produced a speed of 5.8ppm. Despite the fact that these outputs aren’t particularly pleasing, the Brother MFC-290C can print images at a fair speed. A4 photographs took 35.5 seconds on average, whereas standard 4x6in photos took 20 seconds. Print quality is good but not particularly accurate. At ordinary font sizes, mono text publications are readable with no discernible distortions. This machine lacks the precision accuracy required to print excellent 7pt font sizes, and we saw some pixilation as well as misaligned letters. Font sizes that were larger revealed no issues. The color quality is adequate for a multifunction printer at the printer’s pricing. Blues are slightly oversaturated in graphical papers, but the color palette is otherwise neutral. Because the device has various color settings for every media, printing on plain paper will produce different results than printing on photo paper. As a result, when printing images, the color palette alters, with reds appearing oversaturated. While this gives images a lush aesthetic in some ways, it can also result in too dark purple tones. Photos printed do not have the vibrancy of photos printed by other printers, and there is some little banding. When utilizing the accompanying software, a total of eight distinct scan presets are available, with four of these accessible straight from the device’s control panel. All of these can be customized in terms of resolution, format, and the program that is launched upon completion. With an optical scanning resolution of 1200×2400, the Brother MFC-290C can pick up fine detail in scanned images, yet we observed that some detail was lost since images were under-saturated relative to the source. This has no effect on document scanning, however it can slightly distort photographs.
