Brother MFC-5840CN Manual (User Guide & Setup Guide)

We can have a love-hate relationship with the Brother MFC-5840cn. We like its office-friendly features, which include spacious dual-input paper trays, an automated document feeder (ADF), a slew of media-card slots, a built-in Ethernet connector, four independent ink tanks, and, most of all, a low purchase price. Unfortunately, this machine has unappealing appearance, claptrap input trays, slow print speeds, and poor-quality prints and scans, making it a doubtful business investment if you’re impatient and require crisp output. This printer’s compact form is suitable for a small office where room is limited. The dimensions of this printer are typical for an all-in-one, measuring 18.1 by 17 by 13.4 inches (WDH) and weighing 22 pounds, but we like how the paper trays stack up within the main body of the printer, giving it a tiny footprint without protruding pieces. The Ethernet and USB interfaces are likewise located within the printer, beneath the scanbed. This section contains four distinct ink tanks, allowing you to replenish each color as it runs out. The device’s top has a 35-sheet automatic document feeder for multipage faxing, copying, and scanning; it lifts up to access the flatbed scanner. When you need to replenish the paper trays, they pull out like drawers, and the top input tray has a plastic handle to aid, though it feels so fragile that we question how well it will withstand continuous usage. Because the MFC-5840cn’s two stacked input trays contain a substantial total of 350 sheets, you can put photo paper in one tray and plain paper in the other without wasting expensive pages on, say, an incoming fax. Aside from its convenience, this printer is ugly: its two-tone gray plastics are adorned with primary color buttons, and its media-card slots appear to be glued on as an afterthought. The control panel, on the other hand, has an easy-to-read backlit LCD, an alphanumeric keyboard, and clusters of buttons for printing, walk-up faxing, copying, and browsing LCD menus. This gadget allows you to transmit faxes as well as print, copy, and scan in grayscale or color, and it guides you through the process of adjusting the picture quality, number of copies, and print-sorting order. You can print photos without using your PC or Mac thanks to a bank of media-card slots on the machine’s front panel; the text LCD menu can print an index sheet or specific photos by number, and you can even adjust the brightness and contrast, white balance, sharpness, and color density of your images. You can configure the printer to crop larger photos to fit on a smaller page and print borderless. If you want to print two 3×5-inch photos on 8×10-inch paper, the MFC-5840cn automatically doubles them up on the sheet.
