From start to finish, the Brother MFC-5890CN raises numerous questions: Who designed this eyesore? Why is it so pricey? Did they forget to test the features before going into production? Whatever the solution is, one thing is certain: we are utterly unsatisfied with this all-in-one printer/scanner/fax/copier. Don’t be deceived by the large 3.3-inch LCD; a gorgeous screen means nothing unless it’s supported by a robust machine. The Brother MFC-5890CN all-in-one printer is by far the worst printer in our lab. From the troublesome initial setup to the dreadful output quality and poor print speed, this gadget is the simplest way to throw money down the drain. We don’t generally dig too far into packaging, but we must caution you about Brother’s unashamed stickering of its printers. It comes with five boldly placed stickers strewn around the scanner lid, auto-document feeder, ink cartridge bay, and side paneling. Other firms do the same thing, but the difference is that the stickers on this device don’t peel off easily, leaving shreds of backing that appear like your printer was attacked by a raged feline. Unfortunately, Brother printers are always the most dated in terms of design, and the MFC-5890CN is no exception. The cheap black plastic and mushy rubber buttons, together with the weird extraterrestrial design, resemble the first supercomputer in a poor 1970s science fiction film. Furthermore, you’ll note that the printer is far larger than comparable multifunction printers. This tank takes up a lot of desk space, measuring 9.5 inches tall by 19.1 inches wide by 16.1 inches deep and weighing 23.6 pounds. Brother designed its control panel independently onto an extra lip that protrudes out the front, rather than incorporating it into the main body like its more streamlined competitors. A huge 3.3-inch color LCD screen swivels up and down in the center of the control panel, although the notches behind it only allow for three possible fixed angles. A numbered rubber keypad for entering fax numbers into the address book, six speed dial buttons, and an additional set of hot keys for fax settings such as preview, redial/pause, and hook are located to the left of the screen. More buttons for accessing the different print, copy, and scanner functionalities may be found on the control panel’s right side. In addition to the four quick function buttons, there is a fourth button for “picture capture,” which opens a folder to view images on digital memory cards. You can also set the button to automatically copy photographs on a card to a certain folder or to immediately copy the files to an application. The card reader is incorporated into the front of the printer, immediately between the control panel and the paper tray, and has PictBridge USB (for connecting a digital camera), CompactFlash, and SD/MS/xD slots.
