Brother MFC-620CN Manual (User Guide & Setup Guide)

This Brother All-in-One has more features than others. Despite having a footprint no larger than an A3 sheet of paper, it can print, scan, copy, fax, download digital images, answer the phone, and make a cup of camomile tea. Okay, the tea is merely on our wish list, but the MFC-620CN can handle everything else. The grey and silver shell begins with a flatbed scanner, followed by a similarly low-profile automated document feeder (ADF) incorporated into the lid. A full control panel, comprising a number pad for fax dialing and a 16-character, two-line, backlit LCD display with a four-way touch disc to manage menu options, sits in front of this. Directly in front of the LCD display are four buttons for the major operations of photo capture, copy, fax, and scan, as well as single function buttons for color and mono copies and job cancel down the right-hand side. Paper is fed from a replaceable cartridge that slides into the device from the front, as opposed to older Brother multifunction machines, which fed paper from a vertical tray at the back. The paper rotates 180 degrees to eject directly on top of the cartridge at the front, with printed sheets held in place by a pull-out paper support. Under the front lip of the control panel is a 5-in-1 memory card reader that may be used to upload photographs to your PC or directly print them. A mains socket and separate connections for the phone line cable and a handset – not supplied – are located at the back of the left-hand side panel. USB 2.0 and 10/100 Ethernet connectors are also available, although they are located inside the machine, which is rare. To uncover them, hinge the scanner unit up to the left and pass the cables around from the back of the device. To reach the ink cartridges, you must also elevate the scanner device. The Brother printer has permanent print heads, and the simple-to-install cartridges just contain ink. This means a lot of cleaning cycles, especially if you use the MFC-620CN infrequently. A CD-ROM with a software suite that includes an OCR application, full fax functionality, and a network management utility is included. Text print quality on plain paper is adequate, albeit there is some ink spread into the nap of the paper and curves and diagonal edges are not particularly smooth. Graphic colors are bright and rich, with slight speckle in sections of solid color. Photo prints are generally crisp and smooth, and the detail is great with little obvious banding thanks to the printer’s reasonably high resolution. The MFC-620CN’s Photo and Best print quality settings make it difficult to choose the best print quality for a given document. When comparing photo prints created with each of these settings, the variations are minor, with perhaps slightly greater shadow detail in the print created at Best quality.
