In addition to print, scan, and copy features, the Brother MFC-640CW can send and receive color faxes, print images directly from most standard media cards, and work as a full duplex speakerphone (a handset is included), all without the need for a PC. A computerized answering machine that can record up to 29 minutes of messages is also included, as is an automatic document feeder that can handle papers up to 10 pages long. The MFC-640CW includes an 802.11b/g network interface, as well as USB 2.0 and ethernet ports, allowing it to print from networked PCs and scan and fax to and from them. If you don’t want to use Wi-Fi, you’ll need to buy your own cables and connect them to ports inside the printer, near where the four ink cartridges are mounted. The act of opening the unit’s lid is similar to popping the hood on a car. However, the plastic hood prop appears to be brittle with time, and the basic 100-sheet paper tray feels cheap as well. The rest of the machine, on the other hand, appears to be well-made, and the control panel features rubber-textured buttons that have a quality feel to them. Dedicated and backlit buttons for photo capture, copying, faxing, and scanning are situated directly beneath the two-line, yellow-backlit alphanumeric LCD for convenience. The 16MB of memory on the machine allows the 14.4kbps fax feature to hold up to 480 pages and 80 speed-dial routines. Overall, the quality of text and graphics printed on plain paper is adequate but not exceptional. Text was not as sharp or as black as in some other printers we’ve tried (especially those with a pigment black cartridge), and photographs and charts produced on plain paper showed banding and appeared washed out. We noted a washed-out aspect and skin tones with a subtle green tinge on photo paper, which created an artificial appearance overall and made some persons appear slightly pasty. It scanned our 4-by-5-inch color photomontage at 100 dpi in 14 seconds and produced text and graphics pages at 3.4 and 1.1 pages per minute, respectively. The Brother MFC-640CW is an all-in-one printer. It may lack duplex capabilities and provide just mediocre overall performance, but if you’re looking for a low-cost versatile, space-saving machine for your home office or small business, it’s worth paying a visit to your local computer store.
