Brother MFC-6490CW Manual (User Guide & Setup Guide)

We are eager (maybe a bit too quick) to point out the inherent design flaws, anomalies, and overall unsightliness of the devices that pass through our hands every day here at CNET Australia. However, given the size of the MFC-6490CW, that should probably be amended to “hands, feet, legs, and all matter of the anatomy.” The world’s first A3 multifunction printer weights 15.6 kg and dimensions 32.3×54.0x48.8cm, giving it a resemblance to the Incredible Hulk. This is not your average home printer; its size limits it to small companies and medium-sized organizations. We almost couldn’t locate a workstation big enough to accommodate the monstrosity because it overshadowed pretty much everything we put around it. Despite initial concerns about its design, the MFC-6490CW features a full numeric keypad, as well as a slew of other buttons and options on the front panel, in addition to the 3.3-inch color LCD screen. Backlit fax, scan, copy, and photo capture buttons are a lovely addition, and all consumables are accessible from the printer’s front. On the top are a 50-page document feeder, a flatbed scanner, a 3.3-inch color LCD screen, and the standard SD/CF/MS/xD/PictBridge connections. Wireless, Ethernet, and fax capabilities are included, as well as 64MB of RAM and a maximum resolution of 6000x1200dpi. The color cartridges are CMY-BK on the inside (that is, three colours and one black tank). Brother’s Innobella color cartridges have high yield, with each color tank capable of printing 750 pages of A4 paper. The USB and Ethernet connections are positioned beneath the flatbed scanner, which means the wires protrude out somewhat perilously from a hole in the side of the printer, something we can only attribute to temporary insanity on the part of Brother’s designers. Given that this is the only inkjet multifunction printer that can take A3 paper, our first test was to print a photo on the poster-sized sheet. We fed a 12-megapixel source image directly to the printer to evaluate how the MFC-6490CW handled borderless color printing. The printer interface warned us that the procedure would take a while; what we didn’t realize was that we had time to invade a tiny island and prepare a cup of celebratory tea before the print appeared. The equipment takes 16 minutes to produce a color, borderless, A3 print. Plain black and white pages performed slightly better in the speed test, albeit they were still slower than we had hoped. Our five-page test document took one minute and sixteen seconds to finish, with the first page appearing after 27 seconds.
