The low-profile design of the Brother MFC-685CW makes it ideal for homes and home offices. It stands 18.4 inches tall, 14.6 inches broad, and 14.6 inches deep. The 10-page automatic document feeder is flush with the scanner lid, making it less bulky than most ADF-equipped multifunctions. Two memory card slots and a PictBridge USB port are located on the printer’s front face. This printer is a low-cost inkjet multifunction printer with a lot of functionality crammed into a compact space. Unfortunately, its slow print rates and poor print quality detract from its favorable features. If you’re short on space and want to get the most functionality out of a single machine, the Brother MFC-685CW might be the machine for you. You won’t get extensive fax functions, but you will receive rapid printouts and decent print quality that is suitable for professional use. The control panel is easy to use. The 3.3-inch color LCD is unique in that it is a widescreen LCD, which has not previously been seen on a multifunction printer. You can preview images on one side of the screen while studying pertinent information on the other. The printer’s message center and fax panel are located on one side of the LCD. The message center has buttons for playing back and erasing audio messages, while the fax panel has an alphanumeric keyboard as well as buttons for fax preview, redial/pause, hold, and speaker phone. A corded handset is located to the left of the message center and can be used to make phone calls or manually answer incoming fax calls. The second half of the printer’s control panel includes menu, OK, menu navigation, and start and stop buttons, as well as controls for switching between tasks. The paper handling system is combined into a single cassette that slides completely out of the printer. The input cassette, which can accommodate up to 100 sheets of plain paper, is on the bottom tier. A specialized 4×6 photo paper tray that can accommodate up to 20 sheets is mounted on the cassette’s cover. The printed pages are discarded on top of the photo tray. There are a few aspects of the paper system that we despise. To begin, remove the entire cassette before loading paper, either into the photo tray or the main cassette. This prevents the addition of more paper in the middle of a print process. Second, to print from the dedicated photo paper tray, you must manually engage it, which requires you to remove the entire cassette first. After you’ve finished printing on picture paper, remove the cassette to manually release the tray. While we prefer photo trays that engage automatically, we’d be fine with this design if you could engage the photo tray without first removing the entire cassette. The Brother MFC-685CW employs a four-ink system with separate ink tanks. The tanks are installed in a compartment in front of the printer rather than directly on the moving print head. Tubes transport ink to the print head.
