Brother MFC-7440N Manual (User Guide & Setup Guide)

We don’t see many multifunction laser printers, primarily because inkjets are better for producing high-quality scans and photographs. However, the printer industry has recently begun to push laser multifunction printers into the market, claiming that a laser cartridge can create prints on par with inkjets but at significantly faster speeds. The latter is true in the case of the Brother MFC-7440N, although the output quality is poor. It has all the bells and whistles of a versatile printer, such as one-touch faxing, optical character recognition scanning, customisable presets, and an auto-feeding copier, but we prefer an inkjet multifunction printer for printing presentations and color scans. This printer is designed to work in a range of work environments, including the home office and the office desktop, but Brother still has a lot to learn about aesthetics. Nothing distinguishes this printer from the standard, dull office printer design, from the bland matte gray appearance to the rubber buttons on the control panel. While other manufacturers add a distinct style and appearance, the MFC-7440N appears to have drawn fashion cues from an Apple IIe. Aside from its appearance, the unit is 12 inches high by 16.9 inches wide by 15.6 inches deep and weighs 24.4 pounds. The top loading auto document feeder of the Brother can handle 35 sheets of original material for scans, copies, and faxes. The bottom loading paper input tray, as with most laser printers, holds 250 sheets and can take up to 8.5×14 inch legal-size paper. Brother’s regular manual feed tray is located just above the input tray and is used for printing on labels, envelopes, and other forms. The integrated output tray rests above the feed tray and is slightly recessed in the machine, but it does not extend out of the printer, forcing you to retrieve your finished prints in very close quarters. Paper started clogging in the narrow output hole throughout our speed and quality testing. The compact control panel on the printer’s face houses a small, two-line LCD as well as a slew of rubber buttons for navigation, quick start keys, a dial pad, and four single touch fax. Because the LCD isn’t illuminated, it’s difficult to read in low light. In addition, to save space on the panel, there’s a shift button that adds four more quick-dial fax keys. In addition to the fax buttons, there are buttons for each feature, such as hook, resolution, and redial for the fax machine, options and enlarge for the copier, and cancel and secure for the printer. The secure button allows you to easily access data saved in the memory by entering a four-digit password that you choose. The MFC-7440N comes with a low-level toner cartridge that will last 1,000 page cycles. Brother offers a basic replacement cartridge with a yield of 1,500 pages and a high yield of 2,600 pages. The cost is competitively low when compared to the average laser printer, although standalone laser printers will perform the job for less (about two cents per page). In either event, the cost-per-page for this Brother printer is more than acceptable for a small- to medium-sized business. Brother has the option to connect multiple users via built-in 10/100 BASE TX networking in addition to the standard USB connector wire. In addition, it contains 32MB of onboard memory for immediate data storage.
