Brother MFC-820CW Manual (User Guide & Setup Guide)

Brother transitioned from the office equipment side of the market into printer and all-in-one design, and the MFC-820CW looks more like an upgraded fax machine than a printer with fax capabilities. It is, however, a very clean design, with a compact footprint and low profile, thanks in part to a new paper path. Earlier Brother all-in-one machines fed paper from near vertical trays at the back, but this takes up more space and exposes the paper to dust and other pollutants, so the newer design, in which paper feeds from an internal tray, performs a 180-degree turn, and ejects at the front, is an improvement in both respects. An automatic sheet feeder (ASF) for scanning or copying is located on top of the machine and may hold up to ten sheets at a time. Lifting this reveals a typical glass flatbed scanner, albeit the lid feels a little shaky, as if it might fall back down while you’re situating an original. The control panel is located in front of the scanner, and it has a number pad for fax dialing on the left and three buttons on the right for starting and canceling color and black jobs. A four-way menu dial, backlit mode selection buttons, and a 63mm color LCD display sit in the middle. When you use the card readers, this displays both menu selections and photo thumbnails. The MFC-820CW card readers are located on the left, behind the control panel, and support all standard formats with the exception of MicroDrive. There is also no PictBridge socket, thus a digital camera cannot be connected via wire. The paper tray, located in the front center, can hold up to 100 pages and functions as a replaceable cartridge into which you add paper. Once you’ve hinged the scanner part up from the right and it’s held by a folding strut, you can make USB 2.0 and Ethernet connections within the machine. Power and phone connections are done at the rear of the left-hand panel, thus there are quite a few cords if you properly wire the computer. You must raise the scanner part to access the four ink cartridges as well as attach USB and Ethernet wires. These conveniently plug in at the front right and are color-coded, so you connect them into the correct sockets. Installation is dependent on the form of connection with which the gadget will be used. The system is powered by a simple set of drivers via its USB 2.0 connection, but you may also choose between wired and wireless network connections. The MFC-820CW is 802.11b and 802.11g compliant, yet Brother is vague about its Wi-Fi capabilities, as if you shouldn’t be asking. Brother includes copies of PaperPort and, more curiously, Systran Web Translator 5 in addition to drivers for the printer and scanner and uploading photographs via memory cards. This application converts printed text from any of 12 languages to English. It can be used in conjunction with the OCR software included with the machine in PaperPort to translate foreign printed pages, but it can also be used on Web sites, which is an added plus.
