This printer cannot scan in color to your computer, produces poor grayscale scans, and has mediocre scan and print quality. This printer is ideal for small organizations searching for a low-cost multifunction printer. The printer’s squat shape is reminiscent of a huge cash register. The printer is 14 inches tall, 16 inches wide, and 22 inches deep, including the paper support for the automated document feeder (ADF); it weighs a comparatively light 25 pounds. The MFC-8220’s sloped-face control panel, with its two-line, backlit LCD and several buttons, is roughly the same size as a cash register keypad. The design emphasizes space efficiency, which is ideal for cramped offices. Fax and copy jobs are fed from the top of the printer’s 30-sheet ADF, while scanned and printed documents are fed into a front recess within the machine’s belly, right below the control panel. Unfortunately, the sheetfed document feeder prevents you from faxing or copying anything that is bound or is too big or too little. A front-wall flap opens to reveal the toner cartridge and imaging drum, which snap together and slip immediately into the print engine. Blank paper flows from a 250-sheet paper tray in the base; a second 250-sheet paper tray can be added to twice the capacity.
