The Brother MFC-9325CW is a compact color multifunction LED printer designed for small office/home office (SOHO) use. It’s small enough to fit on a desk, but it still dwarfs all but the most massive inkjets, measuring 428x491x401mm and weighing 20.1kg. This model exemplifies Brother’s design philosophy; it’s a no-nonsense printer with a simple two-line LED flanked by buttons that handle printing, scanning, copying, and faxing. Setup was the usual slog of sticky plastic, slamming toner cartridges in, and choosing between direct USB, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi connectivity. We printed through Ethernet for testing purposes because that’s what we’ve done in past color laser comparisons. It’s worth noting (if only for the pedantic) that the MFC-9325CW isn’t a laser printer at all; it employs an array of LEDs, although the quality difference in a SOHO printer, at least for monochrome, isn’t normally that evident. One reason you could consider spending the extra money on this printer is the existence of a front-mounted USB port for flash drives. Our initial testing of the MFC-9325CW were unimpressive; from a cold start, the printer struggled to print a single page, requiring 42 seconds and then increasing in speed to an average of seven pages per minute. When the printer was properly turned on, however, things improved noticeably, with an initial page lasting 17 seconds and a total of 12 pages per minute.
