Brother MFC-990CW Manual (User Guide & Setup Guide)

The Brother MFC-990CW is an excellent multifunction printer with a 4.2-inch touch-screen LCD display, 802.11 b/g wireless networking, a cordless handset with a digital answering machine, autoduplexing, and Bluetooth connectivity, to mention a few extras. Only a few competing printers combine these capabilities and accessories into a single device. It will be a useful workhorse for a busy home office that requires network connectivity and primarily prints high-quality papers and images. The MFC-990CW has a pleasant appearance. Instead of the drab matte-gray finish found on the bulk of Brother’s all-in-ones, the main control panel and autodocument feeder have a glossy black surface, which gives a touch of executive style to the design. The gadget is 18.4 inches long, 14.8 inches deep, and 18.1 inches tall, giving it a small footprint in comparison to other multifunctional devices. Of course, the docking station for the cordless phone adds some width, but the 990CW may easily sit on a desk without adding too much clutter. The control panel takes up the majority of the printer’s exterior real estate, and the main cutout prominently displays a large 4.2-inch touch-screen color LCD display, four feature shortcut buttons (including a fourth labeled “photo capture” that opens a folder to display images on digital memory cards inserted into the media reader), and a numerical keypad for the fax machine. The display screen’s left and right sides have hard buttons for functions like start, stop, and exit, but the rest of the controls are all accessible onscreen. The backlit LCD display makes it easy to navigate through the printer driver software’s main functions and settings. The default home screen shows a heads-up of the job in progress, easy access to speed dial and call history, the current time/date, and a graphical representation of the remaining ink left in the four ink cartridges. Contrary to other printers that only have a touch screen for gimmicks, Brother truly makes good use of it with a straightforward two-tiered menu structure and an automated dimmer that saves energy during inactivity. Finally, the screen swivels up and down in notch increments to provide a range of viewing angles. Brother has several methods for transferring photographs from digital memory cards, the most noticeable of which is the media reader located right below the display panel on the front face of the printer. Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, and xD slots are all acceptable formats. A PictBridge USB connector allows you to connect a digital camera, and Bluetooth completes the transmission choices for wireless printing from an enabled portable device. The big drawer at the bottom of the gadget contains blank sheets of paper, while the top acts as a landing for finished prints. The obvious problem here is that the drawer rests flat in the printer and does not extend far enough out of the device, making it difficult to retrieve outgoing prints from the output cavern. To recover smaller prints, Brother forces you to push your hand into this awkward, covered grotto, so potential purchasers with larger-than-average mitts should keep this in mind.
