Brother MFC-J470DW Manual (User Guide & Setup Guide)

If you require a low-cost multifunction printer (MFP) for your small or home office, choose the Brother MFC-J470DW. The MFC-J470DW, like most inkjet MFPs in its price range, can function as a home and home-office printer. Along with its duplexer, the printer includes faxing and an automated document feeder (ADF), indicating its office-centric orientation. All three features are really useful in the workplace. It also lacks photocentric capabilities that would be more useful at home. It does not support PictBridge and cannot print photographs directly from a memory card or USB memory key. Basic MFP features include the ability to print, fax, and scan to a PC, as well as function as a standalone copier and fax machine. It has a letter-size flatbed for originals that won’t fit through the 20-page ADF. USB is the only wired connection available. The Wi-Fi compatibility allows you to share the printer in a micro office, but the paper capacity is limited, with a 100-sheet tray and no expansion options. A further reason to connect via Wi-Fi is that you can then print from the cloud as well as print from or scan to a mobile device, thanks to Brother’s free apps for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. Overall, output quality is normal for an inkjet, with text and graphics enough for most corporate needs and photographs adequate for most home users. For most inkjets, text quality is at the bottom of a narrow range. I wouldn’t use it for a big presentation where I wanted to make the best impression possible, but it’s adequate for most day-to-day business needs. Graphics quality is slightly below that of most inkjets, but it’s adequate for most corporate applications, such as PowerPoint handouts. Photos in my tests were standard for an inkjet MFP, roughly comparable to reasonably good-quality drugstore printouts. Another advantage of this model is its reported low cost per page for a printer in this price range. A black-and-white page costs 3.8 cents while a color page costs 11.3 cents. When compared to the competition, the more pages you print, the more money you save. With its quick speed, cheap cost per page, and wide range of MFP functions, the MFC-J470DW is the logical choice for personal MFP in a home or mini office for most people.
