Brother MFC-J491DW Manual (User Guide & Setup Guide)

The Brother MFC-J491DW is a low-volume, entry-level all-in-one printer designed primarily for home and small-office use. It sacrifices a low price for a rather limited feature set, relatively poor speeds, and low paper-capacity and output-volume ratings, as do other inkjet machines in this price range. On the plus side, you get good print quality, simple setup, a tiny footprint, and an automated document feeder (ADF) for transferring multipage documents to the scanner. That last aspect is the clincher, a big benefit for a low-cost AIO. This is a great little machine for the money, and it’s ideal for most family rooms and very small offices that don’t print a lot. It’s our most recent Editors’ Choice among entry-level AIOs. The printer fits on most desktops, measuring 6.8 by 15.7 by 13.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 18.1 pounds. This is due in part to the Brother’s 20-sheet ADF stated in the preceding paragraph. These other machines only have flatbed scanners, thus you can only copy or scan one page at a time before physically placing the next one on the scanner glass. This can slow down scanning and copying. In addition, the MFC-J491DW has a 1.8-inch color display for customizing copies, scans, and other capabilities, as well as monitoring consumables. This model’s relatively small screen anchors a dizzying array of navigation and function (copy, scan, fax) buttons and status LEDs, as well as a number pad, as seen in the image above. Granted, this arrangement brings the majority of the usual operations to the forefront, but the control panel is a touch intimidating and extremely last-decade. However, like other modern desktop printers, this little AIO includes a web interface or portal through which you can perform most of the operations offered on the control panel, such as monitoring consumables and creating use reports. It can be accessed via an IP address from virtually any desktop PC or portable device browser. While its ADF does not support duplexing, the MFC-print J491DW’s engine is auto-duplexing, which means it can print two-sided sheets without requiring you to flip and reinsert papers. The printer has a single 100-sheet tray for paper handling, and the maximum monthly duty cycle is 2,500 pages, with a recommended monthly print volume of 1,000 prints.
