Brother MFC-J680DW Manual (User Guide & Setup Guide)

The Brother Work Smart MFC-J680DW is a home and business printer jack of all trades, combining above-average print quality with a rather comprehensive feature set. It isn’t the best home all-in-one printer in every way, but it is a capable printer with a lot to offer. The Brother Work Smart was a tad sluggish, chugging away at a steady 10 pages per minute for both black-and-white and color documents. That may not be a major deal if you only print a few pages at a time, but if speed is important, you should consider a quicker printer. Aside from the speed, the print quality was nearly as good as the top all-in-one printers. While the printer performed admirably with documents, photo printing suffered as a result of the machine’s little damage to the photo paper. We found crimping damage at the leading edge of a handful of our test prints, which is reason enough not to recommend it for photo printing. Ink costs are also quite average, at 16 cents per page when utilizing standard-capacity ink cartridges. This is slightly higher than the 15-cent average we found in our analysis, but you can save money by using high-capacity cartridges, which reduce the cost to 12 cents each page. That’s a lot more reasonable, but it’s still far from the most cost-effective printer. The printer includes a conventional 100-page paper tray and an auxiliary tray specifically for photo material. The tray holds up to 20 pages and sits on top of the main tray, sliding into place to switch between conventional and photo paper. Because the sliding function is a little finicky, you may need to practice a few times to develop a feel for the proper location. The scanner has an automatic document feeder incorporated into the lid, but it folds out of sight when not in use. Because the feeder tray can hold up to 20 pages at a time, you can scan larger documents. Scanner and copier quality was above average, and documents could be scanned straight to online services such as Dropbox, Google Drive, or Microsoft OneDrive. A built-in card slot and USB connector allow you to print directly from memory cards and USB storage. You may preview images on the 2.7-inch touchscreen of the printer and print directly from any PictBridge-enabled camera. All of these capabilities are designed to allow you to print without first dumping files onto a computer. The Brother MFC-J680DW, like all wireless all-in-one printers, offers Wi-Fi networking and Wi-Fi Direct for connecting directly to devices. It is compatible with both Apple and Android smartphones, thanks to Apple AirPrint and Google Cloud Print, and it offers Mopria-certified support for additional devices. Brother also provides remote printing and scanning to your device via a proprietary software. The Work Smart MFC-J680DW is covered by a standard one-year guarantee that includes free phone assistance for the life of the machine. On their website, Brother also provides support via email and live chat. A searchable user manual and frequently asked questions are available online as support materials. The Brother Work Smart MFC-J680DW is better than average for a solid balance of quality printing and useful features, but it does have a few flaws; it damaged photo prints during our tests and costs somewhat more per page than many of the finest inkjet printers. Having said that, it prints and scans high-quality documents, is compatible with mobile devices, and offers a user-friendly feature set.
