Nowadays, will get you a “average” multifunction inkjet printer. You know, the ones that can do printing, scanning, copying, and faxing for good measure. You can buy cheaper, but at this price, you can usually get nice additions like an auto-duplexer (for double-sided printing) and a dual-paper input tray for both standard and photo paper. At that price point, the Brother MFC-J885DW, part of the company’s Work Smart series for small workplaces, includes all of those capabilities. However, unlike so many other excellent Brother printers, this one falls short in several key areas: its slow print speeds are easily outpaced by the competition, the design suffers as a result of its cheap plastic materials, and the paper input tray capacity is insufficient for serious home office professionals. It’s just a “do not buy.” Because of its modest footprint (15.7 inches wide, 13.4 inches deep, and 6.8 inches height), the Brother MFC-J885DW may fit into tight places. But you’ll need some additional room for the paper input tray, which is where my issues begin. The tray is removable, which is convenient for loading paper into it, but why would a printer marketed to small businesses only have space for 100 sheets of ordinary letter-sized paper? Brother claims it can print up to 2,500 pages per month (also known as the “duty cycle”), so be prepared to refill the tray frequently if you anticipate exceeding that amount of printing volume. In comparison, most printers for small enterprises and home offices have at least a 150-sheet tray. Brother attempts to compensate by including an additional 20 sheets of 4-inch-by-6-inch photo paper in a separate input tray on top of the main one, but build quality is also a concern. The plastic utilized by the manufacturer is quite thin and brittle, and I was worrying that sections of the tray would snap off when I reinserted it into the machine. Everything from the media card reader door to the fold-out auto-document feeder is constructed of the same plastic, giving the printer a shoddy appearance.
