Brother MFC-J985DW(XL) Manual (User Guide & Setup Guide)

The Brother MFC-J985DW XL, an inkjet multifunction printer (MFP) for use at home or in a micro-, small-, or home office, is distinguished by its low operating costs. The printer weighs 18.3 pounds and dimensions 6.8 by 16.5 by 13.4 inches (HWD). Its tray has a capacity of 100 sheets of letter-size paper or 20 sheets of 4-by-6 picture paper. Paper, card stock, or an envelope can all be handled by a single-sheet multipurpose feeder. An auto-duplexer is available for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. It contains a letter-size flatbed as well as a 20-sheet automated document feeder that can scan paper up to legal size. The front panel includes a 2.7-inch touch screen. A USB thumb drive port and a memory card slot are located to the left of the panel. MFP characteristics include the ability to print and fax from, as well as scan to, a PC, even across a network, and to function as a standalone copier and fax machine. It can scan to email using your PC’s email application. It can connect to a computer through USB, or to a network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and it can establish a direct peer-to-peer connection with a compatible device using Wi-Fi Direct or NFC. Directly from the printer, you may send scans to websites and cloud storage services such as Facebook, Picasa, Flickr, Google Drive, Evernote, Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, and OneNote. The black cartridges in the MFC-J985DW XL print around 2,400 pages. Each color cartridge has a page yield of around 1,200. With typical micro-office use, the three sets of cartridges that come with the printer should last about two years. The cost of operation is one penny every monochrome page and 4.7 cents per color page. In our tests, the MFC-J985DW produced acceptable inkjet output, with slightly below-par text and graphics and above-par photographs. Nonetheless, text should suffice for most business purposes, with the exception of those requiring small fonts. Graphics are adequate for most internal corporate applications and possibly PowerPoint handouts, but not for official reports. It performed well in distinguishing between zones of similar hues. Many backdrops were slightly faded, with very tiny colored lines barely visible. The majority of our test prints, including one in monochrome, came out beautifully. One thing to note is that there was some detail loss in a few bright regions.
