Traveling digital photographers who don’t have a computer will like the Canon Selphy CP710’s small size, light weight, and mobility. This tiny, 300dpi dye-sublimation printer offers everything you need to generate 4×6-inch images anywhere, including a unique retractable USB cord for your camera, a built-in memory-card reader, and a 1.5-inch color LCD when coupled with the optional rechargeable battery. With a print speed of around 70 seconds per snapshot and a per-print cost ranging from 19 to 35 cents (if you buy Canon’s 108-print paper/ink ribbon bundle and depending on retailer price), the Selphy is both speedy and affordable to run. The main disadvantage of this printer is the lack of simple, stand-alone image-editing tools like cropping, rotation, and color correction. You’ll need a computer and either the Easy-PhotoPrint included software or your own image editor to do these activities. Even if you want to travel with the accompanying power brick, the 7-by-5.2-by-2.5-inch, 2.2-pound Canon Selphy CP710 can be set up in seconds. Connect the power, if required; put the dye-sub ribbon cartridge into the right side; insert the provided 20-sheet paper cassette into a flip-down front slot; and you’re ready to start. It takes a few more minutes to install software and drivers for printing from a computer. Although the Selphy fits most desktops, you’ll need to add 7.5 inches in front for the paper tray and a few inches behind to allow the printer to cycle the paper through separate passes for the cyan, magenta, and yellow dye layers, as well as a fourth protective coating. To prevent interfering with the paper route, we had to carefully place the power supply cords. On the front, right above the input cassette/output tray, you’ll find a pull-out USB cable for your camera and a memory-card reader for Secure Digital/MultiMedia Card, CompactFlash, Microdrive, and Memory Stick media (as well as Memory Stick Duo, xD-Picture Card, and Mini SD card with adapters). All of the additional controls are located on the top. To the right of the fixed LCD is a control pad for selecting photos and the number of printouts for each image. Printing mode (print selected images, all images, or prints specified in the camera using DPOF), layout (bordered, borderless, stickers, or index print), date options, and a Print/Stop key to activate or cancel printing of selected images are all available under the display.
