Despite its projected 29-cents-per-print economy, the Canon Selphy DS810 is a mobile photo printer you’ll definitely prefer to leave at home. The Selphy’s three-color output, 9-by-9-by-4-inch, 4.2-pound design, and lack of battery support don’t compare favorably to smaller, lighter portable printers in this price range. Print quality was notably disappointing; our test output was frequently flat, and the composite blacks (created by blending cyan, magenta, and yellow inks; there is no black ink tank) were a dark, muddy green. The Canon Selphy DS810 is simple to operate. Its top surface is littered with 12 well labeled buttons and switches, as well as a four-way directional pad for navigating menus and selecting print amounts through a flip-up 2.5-inch LCD. The Menu button cycles through print mode choices, while photo modifications are made via a separate Settings button that opens a new menu. CompactFlash, Microdrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, SD/MMC, and xD media are all supported, as are Memory Stick Duo and Mini SD with an adaptor. The connections include USB and PictBridge ports, an IrDA 1.2 infrared port for printing JPEGs from mobile phones and similar devices, and an optional Bluetooth adaptor for connecting to Bluetooth-enabled devices. When you press the Trimming key, a resizable, moveable grid appears above the photo image, allowing you to crop the photo within the limits of the 2:3 aspect ratio of the 4×6 print. The Print, Stop/Reset, and OK buttons are used to access printing capabilities. The majority of the options for stand-alone printing involve layout or crop/trim options, as well as certain image-optimization options such as red-eye correction, saturation improvement, noise reduction, brightness/contrast/hue modification, and a Face Brightener tool. Printing a sample sheet with nine various color-balancing settings, then reproducing with your selected option, is how the color-balancing adjustment is done. Most of these options are available when printing from a computer using Canon’s driver, as well as grayscale printing and a few more special effects. Cropping, color correction, and other adjustments may be made using the included Easy-PhotoPrint program or with your own image editor. While prints with few deep black tones were acceptable, the murky greenish maximum-density shadows tended to make most colors seem flat. We also found some sporadic banding in several prints, which disappeared after head cleaning, and the ink droplets, which may be as fine as 2 picoliters thanks to Canon’s Full-Photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) technology, were plainly visible under 8X magnification. Although Canon says that a 4×6 print may be produced in less than a minute, we measured this printer from 54 seconds (with the default settings) to 80 seconds each picture. Canon’s Selphy line support offers a one-year limited warranty as well as a wide range of phone and online support services.
