The Epson Artisan 800 is a multifunction printer that can copy, scan, and fax documents. The printer is speedier than other inkjet printers in this category, and we appreciate the huge LCD screen and built-in CD drive, but it’s let down by unreliable software and weak components. We spent more time disassembling the paper trays, correcting paper jams, and reinstalling drivers than we did actually printing. If you can get the printer to work on a regular basis, you’ll be able to receive rapid, well-formed photo prints. The design of this printer, which is part of Epson’s new series of all-in-one printers, represents a modern, sleek style. The chassis is shiny black and features rounded edges. The Artisan 800’s top-loading, 30-page auto-document feeder for the copier and fax machine conceals a flatbed scanner. The huge 3.5-inch LCD is prominently displayed on the front of the printer, with hinges on both sides controlling the screen’s angle. The remaining space on the panel is occupied by only two buttons: “Power” and “CD eject.” When you push the eject button on your printer, a CD/DVD tray appears below the paper trays, which you may use to transfer photos onto a blank CD or print your own custom labels. Below the display are separate output and input trays, as well as two memory card ports and a PictBridge connector on the front of the control center. The main reason of our dissatisfaction with the Artisan 800 is the trays that feed paper into the printer. First, Epson’s folding output tray is made of so thin plastic that it bounces around with the least touch. We understand Epson’s desire to make the attachments collapsible to conserve space, but scrimping on fragile materials wreaks havoc on the user experience.
