The Epson EcoTank ET-M2170 is a monochrome all-in-one printer that serves as the flagship model in Epson’s latest bulk-ink line. Both entry-level models print at decent but not blisteringly fast rates and have the lowest operating costs in the consumer and small-business printer market. A document feeder, the ability to send and receive faxes, a bigger touch-screen control panel, and a few more minor extras are available. If you don’t need these features in your small or home-based office, this is a great, somewhat less expensive solution. Epson’s ET-M2170 AIO competes with the various low-cost monochrome laser printers and AIOs on the market. While Epson’s recent efforts may have an influence on the monochrome printer industry, the biggest benefit to you, the end user, is significantly cheaper operational expenses. The most noticeable difference between this model and its beefier sister is the lack of an ADF, which greatly limits the scanner’s convenience and productivity. Without an ADF, you must lay each page on the platen one at a time, one side at a time, for two-sided pages. The scan operation becomes more arduous and time-consuming as the number of pages in your document or stack of originals increases. Where this AIO and its more expensive sister fall short is in monthly volume ratings. The monthly duty cycle is limited to 2,000 pages, and the suggested monthly print volume is 1,500 prints. The M2170’s connectivity includes Ethernet up to 1000Base-T, Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/ns), USB 2.0 connection to a single PC, and Wi-Fi Direct (a peer-to-peer wireless networking protocol for connecting mobile devices to the printer without any of them being part of a local area network or connected to a router). Other mobile connectivity options, in addition to Wi-Fi Direct, include Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, and Epson Connect. This last one is a collection of mobile applications that includes Epson E-mail Print, Epson iPrint App, and Epson Remote Print. The ability to print from and scan to USB flash drives, on the other hand, is missing.
