The most significant issue in any printer purchase, after print quality, is running expenses, with many customers grumbling about the perceived high costs of ink cartridges. Epson has addressed this issue with their EcoTank printers, which replace cartridges with built-in ink tanks that carry enough ink for two years of ordinary use. The EcoTank ET-4500 is a wireless-enabled all-in-one printer that can print 4,000 mono pages and 6,500 color pages. It does not support automated duplex printing, has a mono LCD display, no touchscreen, and a sluggish print engine. The scanner features a 50-sheet ADF, and in front of it – at a fixed angle – is a full-width control panel with a number pad, navigation arrows, and buttons for mono and color copies. The menu structure and visuals on the display are both decent. The solitary paper tray, with a capacity of 100 sheets, is located at the rear of the printer, making it simple to fill. There are also USB and Ethernet ports in the back, as well as a wireless connection with simple WPS configuration. Breaking the caps off the four ink bottles, peeling the foil tops off them, and squeezing the ink into the tanks at the right-hand end of the printer is the first step in setting up the Epson EcoTank ET-4500 for the first time. We dare you to do this without getting ink on your fingers or your desk. It’s also odd that when you print, the display scrolls “Check your ink levels often.” This is on a machine that comes equipped with two years of ink. Nowadays, decent inkjet print is nearly indistinguishable from laser – but the EcoTank ET-4500 output is clearly from a low-end inkjet. The black lettering is blurry and jiggles as a result of one head pass not properly aligning with the next.
