It’s usually a good icebreaker for me to share my photos to folks I meet on my travels. I also make it a practice to give individuals I meet a tiny print. And the small print only costs me a few cents. Furthermore, 4×6 prints are considerably easier to transport than 8x10s. The issue is making these minilab-size printouts. I’ve thrown away a lot of 4×6 pages due to a faulty setting on my desktop printer. It would be far more convenient if I had a specialized gadget for the task. But I already have two desktop printers; do I really need another? I could make 4×6 prints with either of these equipment, but the setup and changeover time is frequently more trouble than it’s worth. The Epson PictureMate eliminates all of that while remaining lightweight and portable. The optional rechargeable battery gives even more versatility, allowing me to print easily over 100 images on a single charge. I also never have to turn on my computer! Indeed, when linked to a computer, the device’s built-in card reader serves as both a reader and a writer, so what’s not to like? The Zoom variant also includes CD writing through a built-in CD reader/writer. There is no input or output tray to attach to the PictureMate Zoom PM 290. Simply raise the cover to reveal your input paper tray, which can hold up to 20 pages. You can connect a thumb drive or PictBridge/USB Direct-Print camera to one USB port on the back, and a host computer to the other (the external USB port is a dedicated port only, so your computer cannot interact with attached USB devices). You may even print from Bluetooth devices with an optional adaptor. What you can’t do is print from both a memory card and an external device at the same moment, since PictureMate only recognizes one at a time. From the menu, select the one you’ll be working on. When you insert two memory cards (for example, CF and SD), the device prioritizes them on a first-come, first-served basis.
