The Epson Stylus CX4800 multifunction picture printer offers a few handy functions that we rarely see in a budget all-in-one, in addition to scanning, copying, and printing from media cards, a PictBridge camera, or your computer. Individual ink cartridges, the absence of specific photo inks to purchase, and a really beginner-friendly photo printing procedure are among them. Furthermore, because this Epson does not allow you to conduct a scan from the printer without a PC, the walk-up functions are limited in comparison to those of other all-in-one printers. This is also one of the slowest printers we’ve seen recently, with regrettably variable print quality. The Epson Stylus CX4800 is a rectangular box (16.9 by 13.9 by 7.1 inches) with a flatbed scanner on top, a 100-sheet paper input tray in the back, and a 30-sheet output tray nestled in front. With a weight of roughly 19 pounds, this small machine pulls off its gray, silver, and faux-chrome plastics with grace and ease. The scanner lid simply detaches to allow scanning and copying of large books, and the top of the printer pulls up like a car hood to reveal the print engine and ink cartridges. A clear plastic door on the front conceals media-card slots for CompactFlash Types I and II, MultiMediaCard, IBM Microdrive, xD-Picture Card, Sony Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick Duo, MagicGate Memory Stick, SmartMedia, and Secure Digital. The slots appear like drives on your computer and can be used to transfer files. A PictBridge connector also allows you to print directly from a compatible digital camera. The lack of an LCD on the Epson Stylus CX4800 may contribute to the printer’s low price, but it limits what you can accomplish without connecting the printer to your PC or Mac (via a USB cable, sold separately). Instead of an LCD, an array of buttons on the top panel provide simple access to walk-up printing settings. You can print an index sheet of the contents of a card, individual prints from that index sheet, or everything on your camera or card using the memory-card button. The Copy button allows you to enter the number of copies, which is displayed on a little LCD counter.
