Epson Stylus Photo RX500 Manual (User Guide & Installation)

The Epson Stylus Photo RX500, like most all-in-ones, resembles an office copier grafted onto an inkjet printer. It has a flatbed scanner on top, a paper-input tray in back, and an output tray on the bottom and measures 17.7 inches by 23.3 inches by 11.9 inches (W, D, H). On the front of this printer is a control panel with an LCD, buttons for scrolling through the LCD’s menu, dedicated Copy and Scan buttons, and a numeric keypad. The panel is well-designed, so accessing the various functions is simple and intuitive. There are removable media options for Secure Digital, Memory Stick, CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Microdrive, and xD cards beneath the LCD. On the plus side, this multifunction printer is inexpensive and supports a wide range of removable digital camera micromedia cards. Even better, this device includes a built-in slide and film-negative scanner attachment for those who want to archive old images. However, the RX500, like most photo printers we’ve seen, produces good photo-quality prints at the expense of text and mixed-graphics results that are only passable. This is the ideal all-in-one printer for occasional productivity tasks such as faxing, printing, or copying for home users who only want to create digital photo albums. Epson includes a connecting USB cable, which is unusual in this day and age. Unfortunately, the USB 2.0 port’s location is not immediately obvious. We were surprised to find the port in none of the usual places, and there was no mention of it in the setup poster. (In fact, the cable was already in place, according to the setup poster.) We had to consult the CD manual to discover that the USB port is located deep within the printer, beneath the scan carriage. While this location makes sense, we believe that the unusual configuration will cause unnecessary confusion and that it should be mentioned up front in the printed setup poster. The Epson Stylus Photo RX500 copies, scans, prints, and faxes (using your own Mac or PC fax software), all with minimal fuss and effort. The Smart Panel graphical software interface guides you through various tasks, such as faxing, scanning a photo into e-mail, or using the included ArcSoft PhotoImpression editing software to create a greeting card from a scanned photo.
