The RX700 is a complete digital photo production system. It can print full-bleed A4 and 4x6in photos from your PC or directly from the memory card of your PictBridge-enabled digital camera. It can also make excellent photocopies of CD/DVD artwork as well as magazine clippings and thick books. Simply place the disc to be copied in the scanner, followed by a printable disc in the input tray, and you’re done. We put this feature to the test with printable Ritek DVD-R discs, and the results were impressive. The inclusion of two paper trays facilitates printing on paper. The rear tray is for photo paper, while the front tray is for plain paper. Printing documents on plain paper in normal mode resulted in slightly feathered images, whereas printing on glossy media in photo mode resulted in super-sharp images. The color tones were very accurate, and the detail in each print was superb. Printing photos was also a breeze. After only 3m12s, a full-bleed A4 photo appeared on the output tray. The separation of its six ink tanks and print head is most intriguing. The ink tanks are located in the front of the unit and are easily accessible. Ink is transported from these to the print head via tubes, which helps to keep the print head’s weight to a minimum. We noticed very little vibration and the operation was whisper quiet. When printing from a memory card, you can first print an index sheet of the images, then select which images to print and the size of the print by coloring in small ovals under each thumbnail with a pen. The RX700 will then process the print instructions based on the scanned data from the thumbs with filled in ovals identifying each image to be printed.
