The Epson WorkForce 320 has an unimaginative look that reminds us of a fax machine from the 1990s, but it’s functional and simple to use. A top-mounted flatbed scanner with a maximum resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi is suitable for scanning documents or transmitting faxes, but the 30-sheet automatic document feeder is a draw. There are even five presets for saving commonly used fax numbers. The fact that this printer has an old-style LCD screen rather than a color one with a graphical interface is something we don’t like. It serves its purpose for basic information display, but we believe that color LCD panels are more appealing to the eye and allow for more text to be displayed. If you print frequently, this will quickly run out, however, unlike a bottom-loading cartridge, the back tray is easy to retrieve and replenish. The initial installation of cartridges as well as the installation of CD-based software takes about 10 minutes. We weren’t able to print black text at the promised maximum speed of 34 pages per minute, but we came close. When printing under draft quality settings, we were able to get just over 28 pages per minute over a lengthier print run of two back-to-back 50-page documents. The WorkForce 320’s initial page out time of 12 seconds is excellent, and it makes it ideal for anyone who needs single-page printouts on a regular basis. Color printing takes about half as long as black text printing. It could output around nine pages per minute in draft quality mode. Epson claims a speed of 15 pages per minute, so our results were slightly off, but not significantly so.
