Epson’s massive WorkForce WF-3530 printer has the appearance of a commercial printer. Dual paper trays, each containing 250 sheets, are housed in the robust chassis. There’s a 30-sheet ADF, Ethernet, 802.11n Wi-Fi, automatic duplexing, and a built-in fax modem. The only flaw is the lack of a touchscreen, which makes browsing menus and entering wireless keys a pain. However, the 6.3cm color LCD is clear and bright. The Epson promises to be able to compete with laser devices in terms of both cost and speed. The former point is addressed with economical high-yield ink cartridges, which provide mono prints for 2p – less than even the most affordable laser printers we’ve seen. Color prints are similarly reasonably priced at 7.1p, however 6 x 4in photographs are expensive at 20p apiece. Quality, predictably, takes a back seat in favor of speed. Although the draft prints came out quickly (18.8ppm), the results were similar to those of an old dot-matrix printer. Increasing the quality to normal improved things, however the output decreased to 14.6ppm and lacked clarity. The Epson is quick at copying, producing passable draft-quality copies in nine seconds, but scanning is its strong suit. With 200ppi color A4 scans lasting only 16 seconds apiece, it combines speed and quality. Photo printing isn’t one of Epson’s hidden abilities, as you might imagine. The prints have acceptable contrast, but they lack the rich colors of the best consumer inkjets, and the heavy grain obscures fine detail. Printing is also slow, requiring 2 minutes and 9 seconds for 6 x 4in photographs. The WorkForce WF-3530 isn’t a photo expert, and it can’t produce the highest-quality papers, but its priorities are elsewhere. It’s speedy, has a lot of features, and has cheap operating costs. As a result, the Epson is an excellent choice for a small office.
