If you’re looking for a single-function printer that can handle tabloid-size paper (11 by 17 inches) and bigger while still being economical enough for a micro, tiny, or even home office, the Epson WorkForce WF-7010 should be on your short list. It is quicker than its nearest competitor, has better paper handling, and produces output that is more than enough for most commercial purposes. The combination not only makes the printer interesting, but it also wins it Editors’ Choice. This printer is one of just a few low-cost single-function printers available today that can handle paper sizes greater than letter and legal. The WF-7010 is the only printer in this group that has two paper trays. This allows you to store letter-size paper in one tray and up to 13-by-19-inch paper in the other, and utilize the printer for all of your printing while effortlessly switching between paper sizes without having to swap out paper in the tray. Aside from that, the WF-7010 can take 250 pages in each tray for a total of 500 sheets and comes with a duplexer (for two-sided printing). This is well than adequate paper handling capacity for most micro and small workplaces, but Epson claims the printer can also take paper up to 13 by 44 inches. According to Epson, you may put huge paper into the 13-by-19-inch drawer, albeit most of the page will protrude from the tray’s front. The major challenge for setup, as with any huge printer, is finding a place for the printer, which measures 10.4 by 22.0 by 16.3 inches (HWD) with the trays closed and 27 inches deep with the output tray fully open. However, once in place, setup is straightforward. For my experiments, I connected it to a network and installed the drivers on a Windows Vista PC. Another advantage is the printer’s speed. I timed it on our business apps suite at an effective 4.0 pages per minute (using QualityLogic’s hardware and software for timing).
