If something performs what it does really well and does not cost an arm and a leg, you are more likely to overlook or forgive its flaws. Epson’s new Expression Premium XP-520 color inkjet multifunction, which can copy, scan, and print, provides just that. It’s easy to forgive its squinty small display and less-than-intuitive controls because the output from its five-ink Claria system is so fantastic. A four-color page costs 12.5 cents to print. Not as inexpensive as a business inkjet, but still quite affordable for a low-volume, low-cost multifunction. The XP-520 is also reasonably quick and has two-sided printing, which isn’t typically a given at this price point. You can stop reading now if you’re reading this on your phone while browsing low-volume home MFPs at your local box store. But if I don’t give you the details, I don’t get compensated. Wi-Fi and USB connectivity are both supported by this printer type. Because there is no ADF, you can only do one-off scans with the A4/letter-sized platen, and the paper capacity is only 100 pages. However, this is a home printer designed for occasional usage, and the capacity is more than plenty for that. My only little quibble is that closing the bottom cassette after loading paper bumps the output tray, requiring it to be re-extended before the printer would work. The XP-520 also includes Wi-Fi direct printing, as well as email and remote printing capabilities. The Epson software bundle takes advantage of all of the MFP’s capabilities. A front-facing SD media card port allows you to print images and other data directly from the card.
